Day 10 The Scoop on Poop
One of the most shocking things I have learned in my quest for good health, is that your digestive tract makes up 80-85% of your immune system and it is mainly in the colon. And I don't know where I thought it was, I guess I never thought it through. The other 15% is in the brain and it is all connected by the Vagus nerve that travels from the brain to the digestive tract. And a compromised immune system is the major cause of most diseases.
Now what resides in the colon for people who eat the Standard American Diet (SAD--and it really is sad)? POOP. Now is this the way God designed it? No not really. He designed it to be a passageway for poop, but poop was not designed to reside there. If you have ever had a newborn baby you see the real design of God. They poop every time they eat and it is the best sign that the digestive system is doing it's job and the process starts before you even give birth. It actually has a very sweet smell. Now if you breast feed, you may eat foods that can effect the smell of the babies poop. And this is really a good thing. experts say that it gives the baby a more adventurous palate and willing to try different types of food as they age.
But eating the SAD diet clogs us up. It is estimated that the average person on the SAD diet is carrying around 12-15 pounds of poop. And when I looked down and saw my belly, that would be me. Interesting fact---when Elvis died his colon weighed 50 pounds and John Wayne's weighed 82 pounds and only 5 pounds of it was living tissue. I guess you have to be famous to have your poop weighed.
Now the whole digestive tract is 23 feet long and the colon is 5 feet long. It contains 60% of the cells in your body. So if it is not moving properly it becomes a cesspool, creating a breeding ground of bacteria, viruses, fungus, worms and toxic gas. This leads to headaches, nausea, bloating, cramps, gas, low back pain and fatigue. So we head to the doctor or pharmacy and buy something to relieve the symptoms but we do nothing to alleviate the problem. So we add those toxins that we buy to the ones that are already in our cesspool and we aggravate the problem even more. But the symptom is the signal that something is wrong and we mask the symptoms temporarily with meds and don't address the real problem. And God designed our body to "fix" it naturally. And that fix is good, nutritious food and water. Yes,(don't faint), we should have 2-3 bowel movements a day--or every time we eat. When we don't fix it, it leads to GERD, (that would be ME), Gallstones, Celiac Disease, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Hemorrhoids, Diverticulitis, Ulcerative Colitis, and Anal Fissures. Any wonder why there is so much colon cancer? So I would look at my symptoms, on the internet and see if there were any natural solutions. I often use an app called Cures A-Z. In some cases it has the traditional medicine approach, but most every suggestion is the natural approach. I can't tell you how many times I have used the suggestions that WORKED.
Here is my story. I ate the SAD diet. Now I think I was blessed because I grew up eating most everything fresh because my Dad always had a garden. So I think I had a good foundation. And in the early years, actually up to 25 years, we had a garden. So my body recognized good food. After that we began to eat canned and frozen overcooked vegetables and a lot of processed food not to mention eating out a lot and fast foods. Our bodies began to get toxic and all the problems that went with it---overweight, tired, low energy, aches and pains, and we just passed it off as getting old. But the big thing I saw in me was GERD-Gastroesophageal reflux disease. Now it started out as indigestion and I ate Tums by the pounds. Sometimes I think I ate more tums than I did food. Then I moved to Pepcid, Zantac, Nexium, etc. I had no idea what these were doing to my body and how they were literally making my body produce more acid that called for more medicine. Even though my husband instinctively knew this was true. When we affirmed this fact later on he had that "I told you so" grin on his face. We later on found out about how Apple Cider Vinegar would take care of indigestion, but by that time I was in such bad shape that it had little effect on me. On him it worked from day one. GERD was another story.
I want you to understand how much I suffered. My chest burned almost 24 hours a day. The only relief I got was if I tanked up on meds before bed, raised my head up as high as I could get the pillows (later invested in a bed that would raise itself), and hope I didn't wake up with stomach acid in my mouth. I considered having surgery to repair the valve that lets out the stomach acid--hiatal hernia, but I knew it was caused by being overweight and eating the wrong foods, and surgery would not fix my problem. I tried a lot of things---not eating late at night, cutting down on spicy foods, giving up caffeine, on and on, but still miserable. One day in my search to become healthy--- really concentrating on cancer and Alzheimer's---I ran across a holistic doctor who gave a list diseases that he had been successful with just by a change of diet. There were also testimonials. He was in Texas, so I said to Larry, "ROAD TRIP". Then I found out he had written a book, so I ordered his book, No Grain No Pain, and I began to give up some things in my diet. The Gerd was not completely gone but it was manageable, especially during the day. I would go hours and think I was cured and then it would sneak up at night, but not every night. Boy that was progress!! I also ordered a stick that would massage my colon and that also helped. But the real cure came when I started eating real food, drinking water, intermittent fasting---all which led to a flat belly. Without the bloated colon pushing up against my small intestine and therefore not pushing up the valve that let out the stomach acid I was cured!!!! God's way, I might add. Now on rare occasions when I eat late at night, an acidic or spicy food, I will feel a slight sensation that I think might become a problem, I put a teaspoon on soda in a small glass of water and drink it. It will immediately stop the feeling and I sleep like a baby. The soda neutralizes the acid. If you are taking acid blockers, I beg you to read the side effects. They are toxic and will add to your problems and create a new set of problems on their own.
So I hope you are eating healthier foods---more color and raw or slightly cooked by steaming or sautéing. Another good thing to do is limit meat. I know it is good protein, but it does not digest very fast and clogs up the colon. If you are going to eat meat, eat some probiotic food first--sauerkraut, dill pickles, etc, and if you are going to have fruit with a meal, eat the fruit first. It will get the bowels moving and the meat will tend to follow. If you want to test your bowels to see how they are moving, eat a whole can of beets and watch your bowel movements to see when the red color from the beets appear. It should be within 24 hours. Beet juice works the same way. Now don't think you have a healthy colon if it appears in an hour. Lots of people have a bowel movement everyday, but do not have a healthy colon. If you have a lot of belly fat, you have a colon problem and I will cover that in another post----how you can heal it.
